Suddenly
The old shepherd fell
Like a decayed log,
His heart gone
Into a cold silence;
And just then his flock
Fell into confusion,
Mournfully bleating.
Without his shouts
And the sway of his stick
The grass did not taste sweet;
Frightened were the sheep
Now that they were left free.
